For the preparation of pesticides and as intermediates in organic synthesis. Used as an acidulant for starch adhesives. It is also an intermediate for dyes, medicines, pesticides, synthetic resins and other organic synthetic materials.

Used in the dye industry to produce indigo dyes. Chloroacetic acid is also an important carboxymethylating agent, used to prepare sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, etc., and also used as a non-ferrous metal flotation agent and a chromatographic analysis reagent.
